When the Music Stops

Most of you reading this particular blog entry probably have some interest in Music or the industry that has facilitated some of the great artists we know and love today.  Most people who are musicians or aspire to be have this preconceived notion that most famous people have at one point or another, done drugs or consumed copious amounts of alcohol and that has "made them a real artist".  While this may or may not be their reasoning, we are only here to speculate on this one since they are dead, do you realize how many GREAT musicians we have lost to substance abuse?  Below is a list that I have compiled of some of the more famous musicians that we have lost to drugs and why.

Dee Dee Ramone of The Ramones- Heroin Overdose

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana- Self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head under the influence of a potentially lethal dose of heroin with traces of valium

John Bonham of Led Zeppelin- Choked on his own vomit after consuming forty shots of vodka.

Steve Clark of Def Leppard- Lethal overdose of codeine, along with valium and morphine and alcohol at more than 3 times the legal British limit.

Howie Epstein of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers- Heroin and prescription pill overdose

Jimi Hendrix - Respiratory arrest caused by alcohol and barbiturate overdose and vomit inhalation.

Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon - Cocaine overdose

Janis Joplin- Heroin overdose

Jim Morrison of The Doors- Official cause of death was heart failure but it is almost certain that this was due to his continued use of drugs, heroin being his main drug of choice.

Brent Mydland of The Grateful Dead- Cocaine and morphine overdose

Bradley Nowell of Sublime- Heroin overdose

Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols- Heroin overdose

Bon Scott of AC/DC- Official cause of death listed as "acute alcohol poisoning"

Hilell Slovak of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Heroin overdose

Layne Staley of Alice in Chains- Cocaine, heroin and codeine overdoses

James Owen Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold- Acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of oxycodone, oxymorphone, diazepam, nordiazepam and ethanol

Johnny Thunders of The New York Dolls- Heroin overdose

Keith Moon of The Who- Overdose on anti-seizure medication prescribed for alcoholism

John Entwistle of The Who- Cocaine induced heart attack

Elvis Presley- Cardiac arrhythmia. Autopsy found in his system significant levels of ethinamate, methaqualone, codeine and different barbiturates, including amobarbital, pentobarbital, and phenobarbital.

As a musician or someone who appreciates music at all, you have to look at this list as see all the potential that was lost to substance abuse.  Can you imagine what bands like Led Zeppelin or Nirvana would have been able to do had they stayed intact long enough to live out their careers?  Drugs and Alcohol did not enhance the minds of these musicians, it killed the music altogether.

There are really artists or musicians who became alcohol dependant, yet I am happy for those who successfully recovered and started to make their lives much better.

Now a days music has become very common in all over the world and it has different types as well. Because people love to listen it for enjoyment which is not a good thing in Islam. Some say that music is food of soul which is a totally wrong thinking. Therefore, here writer has used a title " when music stops" to convey his lesson.
